Luxembourg forum experts to discuss intl security, WMD

The situation in the sphrere of international security and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) will be discussed by experts of the Luxembourg Forum. A session of the Supervisory Council of this international non-governmental organisation for the prevention of a nuclear disaster opens here on Tuesday.

The agenda of the session provides for discussions about subsequent orientations for the forum activities and and for discussion of disarmament problems and prospects for solving them, session organisers have told Itar-Tass.

Luxembourg Forum President Vyacheslva Kantor is expected to sum up the results of the Organisation's work in 2007-2008, and formulate plans for the incoming year.

Then Hans Blix, Chairman of the International Commission on WMD and former Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, will make a report on the theme of "2009 --the Year of Relaxation of International Tension, Disarmament, and Non-Proliferation of WMD".

The session will be attended by many leading world and Russian non-proliferationexperts, among them William Perry, Professor at Standford University and former US Secretary of Defense, Nikolai Laverov, vice-president of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), and Alexei Arbatov, director of the Center for International Security of the RAS Institute of the World Economy and International Relations.

On Monday, the Luxembourg Forum delegates had a conversation at the Security Council of the Russian Federation. Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov received them. An official at the Russian Ministry said after their meeting with the Minister, "The sides considered matters of current importance concerning the activities of the forum within the context of the ensurance of international security".
