IAEA Director General Meets with Plenipotentiary representatives of the International Luxembourg Forum on Preventing Nuclear Catastrophe

On 26 March 2008 the IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei received a visit from Mr. Alexei Arbatov and Mr. Vladimir Dvorkin, the plenipotentiary representatives of the International Luxembourg Forum on Preventing Nuclear Catastrophe.
In the process of the meeting information was presented to the IAEA Director General on the composition of the Luxembourg Forum, on the structure and the schedule of the Forum's undertakings for the year 2008. During the meeting, an exchange of opinions took place on the preparations for the forthcoming meeting of the Preparatory Committee for the 2010 Non-proliferation Treaty Review Conference which is to take place in April - May this year. The representatives of the Luxembourg Forum conveyed their views to the Director General regarding the complex issues associated with the Iranian nuclear program and the prospects of a peaceful settlement through dialogue as foreseen in the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
Special attention was devoted to the need to strengthen the IAEA's safeguards system including broad adherence to Comprehensive Safeguards Agreements and Additional Protocols, improved controls of the nuclear fuel cycle including the possible creation of international nuclear fuel cycle centers, and the fulfillment of all relevant obligations of States party to the NPT.
In the end of the meeting the IAEA Director General gave valuable advice and a number of recommendations for the work of the Luxembourg Forum, expressed support to its activity and readiness for the informal cooperation in various directions of activity, representing mutual interest.
