Deputy director of the Institute of World Economy and International Relations (IWEIR) of the Russian Academy of Sciences

Vladimir Baranovsky graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations in 1972 and received his graduate degree at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1975.  He has a PhD in History (1985), is a professor (2000), corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2002) and full member (academician) of the Academy of Military Sciences. Baranovsky has worked at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations since 1975. In 1992-1996, he was project leader at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sweden). Baranovsky is engaged in teaching: he has been a professor at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations since 1998; he taught as visiting professor at the Free University of Brussels (Université Libre de Bruxelles) in 1991 and at the University of Rennes in 1995.

Baranovsky is co-chairman of the Expert Commission of the Russian Academy of Sciences on awarding the Yevgeny Tarle Prize for best scientific work in the sphere of world history and the modern development of international relations. He is also a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (London), the European Security Forum (Brussels) and the academic councils of the Institute of World Economy and International Relations and the Institute of Scientific Information for Social Sciences. He is also chairman of the Dissertation Council of the Institute of World Economy and International Relations, vice president of the Association for Euro-Atlantic Cooperation, a member of the Russian International Studies Association and a board member of the Russian Political Science Association.

Baranovsky is the author of more than 200 scientific works, among them "Political Integration in Western Europe. Some Questions of Theory and Practice" (Moscow, 1983), "European Community in the System of International Relations" (Moscow, 1986), "Western Europe: Military and Political Integration" (Moscow, 1988), "Russia and Europe. Emerging Security Agenda" (Oxford, 1997), "Russia's Attitudes towards the EU: Political Aspects" (Helsinki-Berlin, 2002).
