Co-chairman of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament
Born 5 September 1944 in Melbourne, Australia
Studied at the University of Melbourne, where he graduated in arts and law; and Oxford University, where he took a Masters degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. In 2004, he became an Honorary Fellow of Magdalen College. In 2008, he was awarded an honorary doctorate of law by the University of Sydney.
From 1971 he was a lecturer and then a senior lecturer in constitutional law at Melbourne University, and was considered one of Australia's leading constitutional lawyers. He became a Queen's Counsel in 1983.
1978-1983 – was elected to the Australian Senate and became a Shadow Attorney-General.
1983-1988 – Attorney General
1988-1996 – Minister of Foreign Affairs of Australia
2000 – 2009 – president and chief executive officer of the International Crisis Group
From 2008 - co-chairman of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament
In 2009 joined the project "Soldiers of Peace", a movie against all wars and for a global peace.
Married to Professor Merran Evans, with whom he has two adult children.
